You just read an excerpt taken from an advertisement on MyLifetime.com for the reality series, Preachers’ Daughters that is currently in its second season. I must say that this show disturbs me on so many levels. Being the parent of a preacher’s three daughters, I could not imagine putting our girls on display for the world to share in their indiscretions. Not only do these kids experience a certain level of scrutiny that the average church kid does not, now the world gets to judge these young ladies as well. You have to wonder if they have possibly kicked it up a notch since the cameras are rolling. What is truly the purpose and how can this be beneficial to their spiritual walk?
If I am honest, I indulge in a reality show or two myself and can therefore understand the fascination with watching people’s lives unfold before our eyes. It just really bothers me that these young ladies are not adults, they are children who are not mature enough to make a decision about putting their lives on full display and who will forever be just a Google away from view. I would be really interested in interviewing these young ladies about five to ten years from now to see how they feel about their behavior as teens being televised. The same should be said about Honey Boo Boo and other kids who are basically exploited for entertainment purposes, it just doesn’t seem right to me. What say you?

I think that reality television has crossed a line that cannot be uncrossed. Channels like TLC and Lifetime should be ashamed of themselves and by what they are teaching the viewers to be right.

I agree with you that, it’s not something I would ever do with my family. I think reality TV is not very realistic, and that these people should know better. Here is a tip on how to remove it from the TV: vote with your feet or remote and don’t watch it.

I have only seen one episode and that is all that I needed. I do not understand the point of religious reality TV. They always come off as a tool to push their church and less about showing religious values. All three of these daughters need guidance and not fame, especially when they asked serious questions about relationships and poor decisions. Rather than having a teachable moment, the parents were catering to what they thought their audience would want to see.
Poor choice to expose your children to this publicity.

Now this topic is deep.. I totally agree with you Shannon.. I mean what is the REAL motive. As a body we are already scrutinized because of our imperfections.. I say the motive is not a good one.. and let’s not leave editing out the mix. Because if one of the ladies is not ‘bad’ enough.. oh she will get replaced.. I would bet on it. I, like you, indulge in a little reality TV.. yet I say leave the Pastors and their kids off it.. unless there is 100% control over what is shown… so that we can LEAD like salt.. instead of looking like everyone else.. just a SMALL bit of my thoughts on this subject.. Where can I began this show is awful in my opinion. And yes I do believe everything has been vamped up for the cameras. Many people have this image of preachers kids. However, I do know of many preachers kids that do try to live according to how they were taught and they are not ashamed of it. Now don’t get me wrong I am not judging these young ladies, but I would not want the world in on my life because something’s should be left private. Everyone wants their 15 minutes of fame. This is not a healthy way to achieve that goal. My prayer is that the Lord will allow these young ladies to gain something that will lead them straight to HIM. There is always a cost for this foolishness.
