As reported in the Grio, “Belgian newspaper De Morgen posted a picture of the first couple with ape mouths to coincide with the president’s recent visit to the Netherlands to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the start of World War I.”
This is where we are today! Racism is a cancer that eats away at this world well beyond one’s imagination. The reason why other countries can attack our President and his family this way is because we as a country do not respect or support him. For a newspaper to act so emboldened to post such a vile display of disrespect speaks volumes of just how far we still have to travel to eradicate racism. What are your thoughts?

Is this for real?!! What is that newspaper thinking? I know that the European Union has a lack of rules and regulations when it comes to what gets printed, but this is ridiculous!

By no means am I condoning this behavior, it is deplorable and lacks appropriate judgement. As I read through the comments there was an underlying sentiment of disgust, which is to be expected for such actions. Someone exclaiming that “an apology is not enough”. I am interested in what people think is a proper punishment for publishing vile material? If an apology is not enough but closing a paper down is, what lesson has been learned if the people of Belgium did not show any outcry?
Isn’t then the real problem the fact that the paper knew they could publish this photograph with no retaliation from its readers?

It is unacceptable to see that in our time again, seeing blacks in positions of responsibility can bother much. Are there still nostalgic for the days of slavery that does not support the tremendous rise of black power? I wonder if this is really their policy discomfort or color.

Kristaps,
Thank you for your response. Many did find it funny when it was George Bush, but I did not. I was equally disturbed when Speaker Pelosi referenced President Bush as stupid on international television. It doesn’t matter which president is in Office, they all should be respected for the office to which they were elected. We can disagree with policies and still respect the office. We disagree with our parents and teachers but it does not give license for us to disrespect them. Thank you for reading my post and providing a comment. Kristaps, you are right, there was pockets of offended people but little outcry collectively as a nation. We should note that in Bush’s case it was against him as an individual and not against a larger group. Though I can not substantiate my claim, I do not see these caricatures as an attack against Obama as a man but rather as a person of color. They would have printed this material about any person of color who was presented before them.

Worse and worse, “first killing after being discussed” here is first one does not care about people, then apologizes; so easy; heads to slap those who allow this kind of nauseating joke; and of course we are told that it is not racist, that’s humor! ben see.

This is appalling and disrespectful to say the least. This country especially the media and other politicians have a lack of respect for President Obama. I do not remember any prior President receiving the disrepect that his been shown to our current. Our nation is in such a sad state.

My thoughts are that the image was shameful. The editor stated that it was a “crossed the boundaries between humor and racism”. I didn’t see any humor only a tasteless display of disrespect. Humor is often used to mask our true feeling and perceptions of other. My heart goes out the Malia Sasha Obama. They should not have to witness their parents being depicted in this matter.

It is beyond shameful. I cannot imagine as a parent what it is like to try to shield your kids from others’ ignorance in this manner. The blessing is that they have two great parents who demonstrate how they are vested in making sure their children have a great upbringing. The First Family has done our nation proud. Just think about it, this President Obama’s second term and we have not heard anything about any antics his kids have done will living in the Whitehouse. Some of our most famous Presidents can’t say the same. Thank you for posting and following http://www.ShannonAyersSpeaks.com.
